Conservatives Kick Cardboard and Plastic Collection into Long Grass

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 16th Jun 2009

At the first meeting of the new Wiltshire Council today June 16th, the Conservative majority kicked into the long grass, proposals for the kerbside collection of plastic bottles and cardboard.

Bradford on Avon Liberal Democrat Councillor, Malcolm Hewson, proposed that Council Cabinet should be instructed to bring forward plans by the end of this year, to collect cardboard and plastics from people's homes - so that it can be recycled.

Instead, the Conservative majority agreed a motion referring the matter to cabinet.

Malcolm Hewson said, "I am very disappointed that the Conservatives have backed away from proposals to increase recycling, lower greenhouse gas emissions and make life easier for residents. The people of Wiltshire have not even been given a timetable for proposals."
