Angry Residents Turn Out Against Lowden Post Office Closure4.50.20pm GMT Tue 22nd Jan 2008
The public meeting, on Thursday 17th, was organised by Duncan Hames and the local Liberal Democrats as part of their campaign against the governments Post Office closure programme. Duncan Hames, Prospective MP for Chippenham commented on the meeting, saying: "Local people are devastated by this closure plan. The local Post Office is a life line for many local residents, especially the elderly, infirm and disabled. "With lots of new housing development proposed for the area, more people working from home, and a growingly older population, our post offices are going to become more necessary, at the same time as they are being taken away." There were representatives at the meeting from Postwatch, Chippenham Town Council, Lowden Post Office, the Citizens Advice Bureau and the Users Network. The Post Office were invited to attend but declined. The event gave local people the chance to voice their opinions and personal concerns about the closure. Comments made will be forwarded to Post Office Ltd. to play a part in their final decision stage. Duncan Hames will be continuing the fight and hopes to meet with a Post Office representative to discuss some of the concerns raised.
