Waste Strategy Inquiry Call6.24.57pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 30th Jul 2007
Liberal Democrat councillors are calling for the County's Scrutiny Committee to investigate the council's plans to burn much of Wiltshire's waste. A cloud of commercial secrecy surrounds the project which has escaped the attention given to local recycling and bin collections. "Local people are entitled to know whether this scheme is value for money and the best for the environment, and I'm determined to find out." explains Lib Dem county councillor Malcolm Hewson. Lib Dem campaigner, Duncan Hames, has closely followed developments at Westbury's cement works for a number of years. The company now plans to apply to burn processed domestic waste. "Reducing waste, and recycling more are better for the environment than burning it. "The county council should come clean on their evaluation of these options, and explain why they plan to burn so much of our rubbish." says Duncan Hames.
