Stations in West Wiltshire, including Warminster, are set to lose several trains in each direction each day from December, if First's proposed timetable for the new Greater Western franchise gets the go-ahead.

Cllr David Lovell has learnt that First will also be reducing the remaining trains from three coaches to just two.

"Trains through Warminster are already full at busy times. We need to improve services to make rail travel a real alternative to adding to Wiltshire's crowded roads." says Cllr Lovell.

He is now going door-to-door collecting a petition to oppose the cuts.

"The proposed reduction in local services to Warminster is appalling and unwarranted." says Cllr David Lovell.

Lib Dem led West Wiltshire District Council has written to First as part of the consultation on the timetable, saying:

"The District Council reiterates its criticism of the DfT specification for the franchise and the complete lack of strategic thought within that document. It is noted that both rail users and the Regional Assembly oppose the approach of reducing local service."
