Westbury looks to Europe for environmental protection

2.08.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 21st Sep 2005

Lib Dem spokesman, Cllr Duncan Hames, has raised the need for firm environmental regulation of cement works like Westbury's at a conference forum to be broadcast on Sky News tonight.

"We not the party of Europe, but we are the party for a better quality environment" said Cllr Hames.

"Time and again the best hope for serious environmental protection isn't to be found in Westminster, but actually in Europe." said Cllr Duncan Hames

"Where I live, in West Wiltshire, it is the European Parliament which is providing the environmental regulation that we look for to control emissions from the Westbury cement works. Time and again the best hope for serious environmental protection isn't to be found in Westminster, but actually in Europe."

"We often need to work together with other countries to tackle environmental issues, and where that is the best protection for the people we serve we are right to stand up for it. Our constructive attitude to Europe is essential in seeking to look after the environment and support a better quality of life." he concluded.
