Simon Hughes MP visits Trowbridge Mosque4.43.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 30th Mar 2005
Simon Hughes MP, Liberal Democrat Party President, was in Trowbridge today to visit the town's Mosque with local Lib Dem spokesman, Cllr Duncan Hames. The Lib Dems' former Shadow Home Secretary discussed a number of issues of concern including: crime and policing, religious education in schools, and the problems for religious communities caused by government reliance on lottery funding programmes. Mr Hughes joined Cllr Hames for a meeting with representatives of the Wiltshire Racial Equality Council and the Trowbridge Mosque. "I was delighted to welcome Simon Hughes to Trowbridge." says Lib Dem spokesman Duncan Hames. "Having been an MP for over 20 years, his experience of immigration rules and also religious and faith group concerns was, I believe, particularly helpful on this visit." "Simon's trip to Trowbridge is a tremendous boost for the local Liberal Democrats" adds Cllr Duncan Hames. "It shows that the Liberal Democrats are serious about winning this constituency, when the election comes." He concluded. The visit by one of the Liberal Democrats most senior MPs was part of a tour of the party's most winnable seats in the West in advance of a General Election expected on May 5th 2005.
